Feb. 29, Interview - Project Vote is has filed a suit against Ohio for failing to
provide voter registration forms at welfare offices. In
their report, Project
Vote says this has greatly reduced the number of low-income people registering
to vote. In 1995, following the law, Ohio registered 100,000 people from welfare
offices. That number decreased dramatically to just about 40,000 people in
2005.
Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer
Brunner says the former Secretary
of State, Ken
Blackwell (who is involved in numerous lawsuits and is on the
verge of being subpoenaed by Congress because of Ohio's disastrous 2004 election)
he felt it wasn't his responsibility to provide voter registration at welfare
office . Brunner says she thinks that the Secretary of State can "enhance that service." Brunner
says the State Legislature has called for a measure that would allow change of
addresses of welfare recipients to occur automatically.
As for providing services
directly at welfare offices, Brunner says Ohio "doesn't
have the resources." She says "We'll use whatever resources we have," but "that
it may be a longer term project."
