Many of McCain's foreign
policy advisers have helped to craft President Bush's foreign policy. Many
of his advisers are architects of the Iraq War and Neo-conservatives, the right
wing ideologues who influenced Bush's foreign policies like the Iraq War, have
been flocking to McCain's aid since it became apparent he will be his party's
nominee.
Randy
Scheunemann is McCain's new defense and foreign policy adviser.
He is a former adviser to Defense Secretary Donald
Rumsfeld. He was President
of the pre-war Committee
for the Liberation of Iraq to oust Saddam Hussein.
Steve Schmidt, is McCain's high powered new political strategist. He worked
on Bush's 2004 campaign and was Bush's attack dog whenever former Presidential
candidate John Kerry criticized the Iraq War policy. They join other neocons
on McCain's campaign like former CIA director James Woolsey. Woolsey helped
direct US attention toward Iraq after 9/11 when on the next day he falsely
accused the Iraqi Government of having a role in it.
"He represents a manner of foreign policy that
I think is very dangerous for the United States. It's a continuation of the
neo-conservative approach. I think it's done tremendous harm to US foreign
policy."
Jacob Heilbrunn, senior editor at The
National Interest, a publication of the Nixon
Center, says that with McCain the neocons will dominate US foreign policy.
"People
are going to be surprised to the extent that McCain is George W. Bush on
steroids. If McCain becomes President the Neocon influence will be at its
zenith historically."
Including
the policy on Iran Heilbrunn says.
"Most neo-conservatives are very sympathetic
to the idea of attacking Iran."
During a recent talk about energy security McCain
adviser, former CIA director James
Woolsey insisted Iran has a nuclear weapons
program, Despite a latest intelligence report that suggested otherwise.
"The government of Iran is as far as I'm concerned continually embarked
on nuclear weapons program."
An alleged nuclear weapons program, one of his other
arguments for a US Military build up in the region. In January, Woolsey told
Israeli TV that the US could simply not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear bomb.
"Well
I agree with Senator John McCain. A terrible thing would be if we had to
use force but there is one thing that's worse and that is letting the Iranians
have a nuclear weapon."
Despite help from the powerful Neocons and the Republican
political machine, John McCain must still face voters who are tired of the
Iraq war, frightened of war with Iran, and angry about the billions in tax
dollars being diverted to the war in Iraq every year.
