August 22 - More than a years worth Democratic convention protest preparation, which
included lawsuits challenging limitations on free speech is about to come to
an end. Saturday the events officially begin as activist organizers will hold
trainings and know your rights forums. Larry Hales is an organizer for Recreate
68 and FIST previews the week ahead. Hales begins by discussion limitations
the city placed on protesters.
"Well, we have a number of speakers, well known speakers, that
will be coming, speaking at the anti-war march, on August 24th. Cynthia McKinney
will be here, the Green Party Presidential candidate. Chairman Fred Hampton
Jr. will be speaking. Many speakers from the communities of color, leaders
from communities of color that will be coming, andaddressing the crowd."
As Democratic convention protestors put the finishing touches on their protest
plans, debate over the relevance of the protests exists among the left. Pacifica's
Verna Avery Brown spoke with historian Howard Zinn and Labor Activist Bill
Fletcher about protest tactics on her show What's At Stake. Professor Zinn
encourages protest at the Democratic Convention.
