May 5, Headlines - Barack Obama edged out Hillary
Clinton in the Democratic Presidential caucus
in Guam by just 7 votes. Guam will send 8 delegates, which are only worth
half a delegate each, and 5 Super Delegates to the Democratic Convention even
though residents of the US Territory do not get to vote in the general election.
In addition to the caucus in Guam, a special election in Louisiana took away
a Congressional seat held by Republicans for 20 years and handed it to a Democrat.
Democrat Don Cazayoux defeated Republican Woody Jenkins 49 to 46 percent.
In election reform, Senators Russ Feingold of Wisconsin,
Amy Klobuchar of
Minnesota, Jon Tester of Montana, and Tom
Harkin of Iowa are pushing for legislation
that would require states to allow same-day voter registration in federal elections.
Lawmakers say same-day registration would make voting easier and encourage
more people to vote. Currently 8 states allow same day registration laws.
Hillary Clinton continues to keep secret the names of contributors to the
Clinton Library Foundation. She says the identification of the donors need
to be protected. This comes even though the library sold the donor information
to a US database firm. Critics charge that Clinton needs to release the names
to make sure there is no conflict of interest between the Clinton Library and
the Clinton campaign. Clinton says she would release the names if she were
to win the Presidential election.
